Meg Stalter will make her Broadway debut this summer in “Oh, Mary!,” taking over the title role at the Lyceum Theatre for a limited engagement beginning July 6.
The 10-week run is scheduled to continue through September 12. Stalter succeeds Maya Rudolph, who is currently leading the production and will play her final performance July 5.
In a statement, Stalter described her connection to playwright and original star Cole Escola, as well as her reaction to the role.
“When I first met Cole Escola, they said, ‘I thought I was too old to feel this excited and giddy about a new friend,’ and that’s exactly how I felt when I met Mary Todd Lincoln for the first time,” Stalter said.
“I’ve never seen myself in a character the way I see myself in Mary, which is strange because I don’t even drink, but that’s what Cole’s beautiful work does to you—makes you feel incredibly excited and seen at the same time, like a little kid meeting a new friend.”
She added, “I’ve been in love with Cole’s brain, heart, and work since the moment I had the privilege of experiencing it, and it’s the prize of a lifetime to get to be in the best play to ever be written! Cole, despite our insane public breakup in 2018, I love you, thank you for making my dreams come true.”

Rudolph currently stars alongside Bianca Leigh, Phillip James Brannon, and Cheyenne Jackson. Tony Macht is also part of the company, with understudies Hannah Solow, Martin Landry, and Julian Manjerico completing the cast.
Written by Escola, “Oh, Mary!” centers on Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The play presents a stylized and comedic interpretation of the historical figure, depicting her as a cabaret-focused and unpredictable personality.
The production premiered Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2024, where its run was extended three times. It later transferred to Broadway the same year. At the 2025 Tony Awards, “Oh, Mary!” won two honors: Lead Actor in a Play for Escola and Direction of a Play for Sam Pinkleton.
Tickets for the Broadway production of “Oh, Mary!” are currently on sale through January 3, 2027. The show is also expanding beyond New York, with a West End engagement at London’s Trafalgar Theatre scheduled to run through July 18. A North American national tour is planned to launch in Hartford, Connecticut, in September.
