‘Spring Awakening’ Revival Set for Off-Broadway Return This Fall

The Tony Award-winning musical “Spring Awakening” will return to Off-Broadway this fall in a new production at Studio Seaview. 

Producers also revealed plans for an open casting call on July 10 and 11. Additional details about auditions will be shared through the production’s social media channels.The revival will be directed by Tony winner Danya Taymor. Performance dates and casting have not yet been announced.

The creative team will include choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall, making her theatrical debut, and music supervisor Or Matias.

“Spring Awakening” first premiered Off-Broadway at Atlantic Theater Company in 2006 before transferring to Broadway later that year. The production became a major success, winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play, “Spring Awakening” follows a group of teenagers in late 19th-century Germany as they navigate adolescence, sexuality, and self-discovery in a restrictive society. The musical features a contemporary rock score by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater.

The original cast featured several performers who would go on to prominent careers, including Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, John Gallagher Jr., Lilli Cooper, Gideon Glick, and Skylar Astin. Gallagher won a Tony Award for his performance as Moritz Stiefel.

The musical returned to Broadway in 2015 in a production by Deaf West Theatre. That revival incorporated American Sign Language and received critical acclaim for its innovative staging.

In 2022, the documentary “Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known” was released. The film focused on the show’s 15th-anniversary reunion concert and featured members of the original cast reflecting on the musical’s legacy and impact.
